Deek says hi! Unfortunately, over the winter months, Deek has gained a few pounds...his mom says he's now too fat. There have been lots of other big kitties coming in the past few months--Deek found out that obesity is the number one diagnosis for cats in veterinary medicine!! Wow! Part of the reason that so many kitties are big is because of carbohydrates. Deek LOOOOOOVES carbs. But based on how they evolved, cats really aren't designed to digest and handle carbs--how many carbs does a mouse or bird have? None, Deek says!!! Cats evolved in the desert and got most of their water from meals--mice and birds and such are 70% water like humans. So grain filled dry diets are not the best way for cats to maintain lean body mass. A majority of dry diets on the market today have more carbs than are good for cats. The best is less than 15%, for purists, less than 7%. Deek has started getting wet food daily in addition to a dental diet (to help keep his teeth clean) so that hopefully he can lose some weight and get his girlish figure back.
